1. What are the causes of hair loss?

The commonest cause of hair loss is heredity. Other causes are poor nutrition, stress, ill health, fungal and bacterial infections and side effect of prolonged use of certain medicines.

2. What is Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant is an out-patient surgical procedure. It is the only permanent method of hair restoration, involving transfer of one’s own hair on to the bald areas.

3. What do you mean by hair weaving, hair fusion and hair bonding?

These are all temporary techniques. An external hair bearing device is attached to the existing hair using weaves, sticking tape or clips. Prolonged use can cause damage to the existing hair and bad hygiene.

4. Is Hair Transplant painful?

Some amount of discomfort can occur during the injection of local anaesthetic. With the usage of very fine needles and special injection techniques, pain will be minimized. Many people report no pain at all.

5. What is Follicular Unit Micro grafting?

Normal hair grow in groups of 1, 2, 3 or 4 hair and when transferred as a unit, give a natural and robust growth. This principle is followed in follicular unit micrografting and is the best method of hair transplantation.

6. Can females undergo hair transplantation?

Yes.

7. What happens to the donor site?

The donor site is closed and hidden in the surrounding hair.

8. Does the procedure require admission?

The entire procedure is done under local anaesthesia and does not require admission. The procedure is limited only to the skin outside the skull bone and is very safe.

9. How long does the procedure take?

It may take 4-8 hours to complete a hair transplant, depending on the number of grafts to be placed.

10. When do the transplanted hair start growing?

The hair start growing after 3-4 months and keeps growing thereafter like rest of the hair.

11. What are the medical remedies available to treat hair loss?

At present there are only two remedies approved for hairloss. In terms of topical applications, we have Minoxidil . In the pill form we have Finasteride in 1mg strength. They are effective (either singly or in combination)in a large number of patients.

Of course, the most permanent treatment for hair loss is hair transplantation, which is safe, effective, long lasting and cost effective.
